How to become a certified hiking guide:
The first obstacle to overcome is to develop your personal skills resume that demonstrates the following:
- A detailed resume showing a variety of mountain hikes and backpacking trips that include off-trail travel and significant elevation gains
- Exceptional map & compass and navigation skills
- Good route planning and logistical skills
- Excellent leadership and group management skills
- An 80 hour wilderness first aid certificate
- General mountain sense
- Travel in a variety of terrain and conditions
A common stumbling block for many applicants wishing to become a hiking guide is poor navigational skills. Another is a general lack of mountain sense and experience. Consider taking a navigation course to refresh or top-up your skills, or Yamnuska's Scrambling Skills course to develop your route finding and mountain experience. Additionally, any leadership or emergency preparedness courses you have taken will be extremely beneficial.
Please contact the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides for a detailed listing of the current application and examination requirements.
Porters & Class 4 Drivers
Yamnuska Mountain Adventures employs porters at various times throughout the year for the purpose of supporting programs and clients. Porters carry food and gear into an alpine hut, backcountry campsite, or to actively assist a guest or group on one of our trips.
Porters need to have a high recreational experience level in the mountains. For details, please contact: info@yamnuska.com
